Day 9: Okonjima Lodge, Okonjima, Namibia Depart the Lodge on your charter flight at around 10h00 to still arrive in Windhoek at the Eros Airport in time to collect your rental vehicle, before continuing northwards again towards Okonjima Lodge. If time allows it you can also make a stop at the craft market in Okahandja to view the great talent of these local people.
At Okonjima, home of the Africat Foundation, guests are given a firsthand glimpse of the work done by the Foundation, and you will have the chance to see Cheetah, Leopard and Lion. These carnivores are researched and rehabilitated by AfriCat, as well as other game species introduced into this area.
Okonjima offers en-suite double rooms at the main camp. Activities include viewing and photographing big cats, guided and self guided trails, game watching from a nocturnal hide and several bird-watching hides. Okonjima will leave you with unforgettable impressions and the welcoming staff will keep you busy from dawn till dusk. Please be advised that the afternoon activities will commence at 15h00, so arrival and check in should be in time. Days 10 – 12: Okonjima / Waterberg Wilderness Lodge, Waterberg, Namibia Enjoy your morning activity at Okonjima, perhaps a walk in search of some Cheetahs before departing to your night’s accommodation at Waterberg, only a short drive for the day. Farm Otjosongombe (place for cattle) is the only farm that has a valley and also boasts the strongest natural spring. The abundance of water makes for unique animal and plant life.
Professionally guided walking trails onto the Waterberg Plateau and deep into the valley are offered. Special emphasis is placed on the flora. The vegetation around the lodge can be described as thornbush and bush savannah.
Due to the great variety and abundance of plant life one will find many different kinds of mammals, reptiles and birds at Waterberg. Leopard may still be found in the caves among the mountain. In addition to the guided walking the Lodge also offers optional sight-seeing tours and game drives on the southern section of the farm. On request the neighbouring farm Hamkari can be visited to view the memorial commemorating the battle of 1904 between the Herero and the German Schutz-truppe. Dinner will be enjoyed back at the Lodge. Days 13 & 14: Ongava Lodge, Ongava Private Game Reserve, Namibia Depart further north after breakfast towards Ongava. Ongava Private Game Reserve is located on 30 000 ha of privately owned land. Bordering the Etosha National Park at the Okaukuejo/Ombika the gate the lodge provides easy access into the magnificent park for daytime excursions. Game drives on the Ongava Private Game Reserve encounter prolific wildlife of all species including the elusive white and black rhino. Optional night drives offer an insight into the habits of elusive nocturnal creatures.
The lodge provides up-market, air-conditioned chalets, each with private deck and unobstructed views of Ongava Private Game Reserve's spectacular surroundings. The thatched main lodge with lounge, bar, adjacent swimming pool and open-air deck, allows dinner to be served under the stars in full view of the floodlit waterhole. Enjoy game drives through Etosha National Park. The Etosha National Park, consisting of 22 270 km of saline desert, savannah and woodlands, is one of the largest parks in Africa. Its definitive feature is the Etosha Pan, a vast, shallow depression of approximately 5 000 km. Of the 114 mammal species found in the park, several are rare and endangered, such as Black Rhino and Black-Faced Impala. The latter is endemic to North-western Namibia and South-western Angola.
Etosha’s current population of approximately 300 Black Rhinos represents one of the few growing populations in the world. Their Elephants are reputed to be of the largest Elephants in Africa, the tallest ones measuring up to 4 m at the shoulder. Their tusks, on the other hand, are relatively small, due to genetic defects and mineral deficiencies in their diet. Please note that once out of the rest camp enclosures, visitors may vacate their vehicles only at designated points. Dinner will be enjoyed back at the Lodge. Day 15 & 16: Hotel Furstenhof, Windhoek, NamibiaYou can still enjoy one last short game drive into Etosha if you want, before departing back towards Windhoek, to arrive there in the late afternoon.
