Damaraland activities at Doro Nawas include fabulous guided nature drives in open Land Rovers, mountain biking, bird watching and stargazing. Excursions take guests to archaeological wonders and some of the oldest geological formations in the world.
Wildlife is most often seen in the dry riverbed and in the valley. Apart from unique Namibian desert adapted elephants, guests can also see Gemsbok, Kudu, Springbok, Steenbok and on occasion, endangered Black Rhino. Predators include Brown Hyena, Bat-Eared Fox and Black-Backed Jackal.
Birding enthusiasts can see endemics such as Monteiro's Hornbill, Rüpell's Korhaan, Benguela Long-billed Lark and Bokmakierie. The Raptor family are represented by the Secretarybird, Pale Chanting Goshawk, Booted Eagle and Black-Chested Snake-Eagle. Occasionally the Lappet-faced Vulture and Martial Eagle also put in an appearance. Rainfalls attract other species like the Red-Billed Quelea and Gabar Goshawk.
The prehistoric Rock Art and engravings at Twyfelfontein, a World Heritage Site, are difficult to date but some are estimated to be around 5 000 years old. The San people left these glimpses of their life journeys on the sandstone cliffs in the area. Nearby, guests can also investigate the amazing 280 million year-old Petrified Forest or fossilised tree trunks, Burnt Mountain and dolerite pillars called the Organ Pipes.
